God of War Ragnarok has a side quest that is a beautiful tribute to a developer who passed away

Spoilers ahead for a side quest in God of War Ragnarok!

God of War Ragnarok has a side quest that is a beautiful tribute to Jake Snipes, a game programmer at Santa Monica Studio who passed away in 2020.

The side quest in question is called Across the Realms, and its meaning was shared on Twitter by sam handrick, a senior game programmer at Santa Monica Studio who was also a partner at Snipes.

“There is something about God of War Ragnarok that is most special to me,” Handrick wrote. “I had to present it and the team turned it into everything I could have hoped for. I was hoping to wait a while to talk about it, but I want to share it now, just in case. It’s the ballad of Jari and Somr.”

Those traveling through the world of God of War Ragnarok may have noticed the first signs of the side quest in the green hearts that are painted on the rocks of the realms, and the origin of them and the quest began with an idea from Handrick and Snipes formed years ago. .

The two would talk about how much they “would love to leave a symbol of us in Ragnarok. Any indication within this game that it had been the reason we met, our first game ever made together. He once suggested just a heart, with our initials on it.” In Norse runes, carved into this world we created.”

Sadly, Snipes passed away in 2020. Once Handrick was able to get back to work, he knew he wanted to make God of War Ragnarok “everything.” [Snipes] deserved.” He also wanted to make sure that Snipes’ memory would live on forever in the game.

Snipes asked God of War director Eric Williams if it would be possible to include a memorial to Jake in the games, and he “did a lot more.”

“I told Eric and the team about Jake’s suggestion that we carve our initials into a heart,” Handrick shared. “And he and the team came back with that and something even more special. A story of two men meeting in an often cruel world, and finding a place to simply belong to each other.

“I wanted this story to be one that a lot of queer people know: traveling through a world that doesn’t always understand you to find a place that truly makes you feel at home. And sometimes that place is just a person. And something so simple as a recipe can be a link to that house”.

During the quest, you will come across a rainbow campfire that “never stops burning.” This is part of Jake’s memory that he will live on forever.

“This fire never stops burning,” Handrick said. “Through the coldest days, through the nights you don’t want to live. It will remain in this world @SonySantaMonica created for all time, telling the story of a man in whom I found something nameless. Something he still carries now” .

The quest, for those curious, has you travel across the realms to find four ingredients that will create a comfort food that permanently increases all of your stats by five. It is a “delicious creation that warms the body and soul.”
