Description

The Clinical Artificial Intelligence Lab at NYU Abu Dhabi seeks to improve patient care by developing new machine learning (ML) methodologies that address unique computational problems in healthcare applications. We use large complex data sets from the real world, including data extracted from electronic health records and medical images, for applications related to patient diagnosis and prognosis.

We are looking for a Postdoctoral Associate to join the team and make significant contributions to the field. Researcher is expected to have (i) strong machine learning skills to improve model accuracy, robustness, and explainability, and (ii) exemplary passion and motivation to conduct multidisciplinary research at the intersection of computing and care medical. Methodologies of interest include:

  • multimodal Learning,
  • transfer learning,
  • graphical Neural Networks,
  • transformers,
  • and self-supervised learning.

The Postdoctoral Associate will be based primarily at NYU Abu Dhabi. The investigator will report directly to Dr. Farah Shamout and will work closely with other researchers, doctoral students, and undergraduate research assistants. The researcher will liaise with our regular collaborators at the NYU Data Science Center, NYU Radiology, and the NYU Tandon School of Engineering, as well as local medical institutions in the UAE.

key responsibilities

Research

  • Support the supervisor in the development and implementation of the research agenda;
  • Carry out high-quality and innovative research focused primarily on the development of machine learning methodologies for healthcare;
  • Generate new high-impact ideas from gaps and limitations of the state of the art (SOTA);
  • Design and implement experiments to compare the proposed work with the SOTA baselines;
  • Publish research results in high impact journals and conferences;
  • Communicate and present research results at international academic meetings;
  • Create, maintain, and document high-quality research code for reproducibility;
  • Maintain good practices in the management of and access to sensitive medical data sets;
  • Assist the supervisor in the preparation of grant applications (as applicable);
  • And collaborate with scientists within the NYU Global Network and in Abu Dhabi.

Training and professional development*

  • Attend trainings and workshops for professional development;
  • Mentor PhD students and undergraduate research assistants (as appropriate);
  • Actively participate in events and committees at NYU Abu Dhabi, such as the Postdoctoral Council Steering Committee;
  • Gain experience applying for local research grants (subject to eligibility);
  • And transition to independence to pursue a career of choice upon appointment.

* The researcher will create a personalized training and development plan with the supervisor.

minimum qualifications

  • Currently holds or is in the process of completing a Ph.D., MD/PhD, DPhil, or equivalent terminal degree from a recognized institution (no more than 5 years from completion of Ph.D.)
  • Doctoral research in the area of ​​machine learning and artificial intelligence
  • Bachelor’s/Master’s degree in computer science, mathematics, computer engineering, or a relevant technical field
  • Published peer-reviewed articles by the first author (or in the process of being reviewed)
  • 3+ years of demonstrable research experience related to data preprocessing and preparation for machine learning models
  • 3+ years of demonstrable research experience conducting experiments to train and evaluate deep neural networks
  • Proficient programming experience in Python and libraries (eg, Pytorch, TensorFlow) with several years of practice
  • Experience in maintaining high-quality code on Github
  • Experience running and managing experiments with GPUs.
  • Ability to visualize experimental results and learning curves.
  • Effective interpersonal and teamwork skills.
  • Self-motivated with the ability to work independently and in a team to get the job done.
  • Excellent communication skills (oral and written communication)
  • Eager to learn and face new challenges

preferred qualifications

  • Doctoral research conducted in the area of ​​machine learning for healthcare and related topics
  • In-depth knowledge of multimodal learning, transfer learning, graphical neural networks, transformers, or self-supervised learning
  • Experience in handling large medical data sets (eg, electronic medical record data or medical imaging)
  • Ability to use a high performance computing cluster

The appointment will be for two years, with the option to renew more depending on performance (in total not to exceed 5 years).
