Cristiano Ronaldo became the first player to score in five FIFA World Cups as Portugal kicked off their campaign with a thrilling victory over Ghana.
Ronaldo played for the first time since his controversial TV interview last week and his subsequent sacking by Manchester United following the comments.
And the 37-year-old scored the first goal from the penalty spot after being tripped over by Southampton Ghana defender Mohammed Salisu in the penalty area.
Captain Ronaldo had a few chances at the start, but Lawrence Ati-Zigi choked a low shot that also shot wide of the far post.
The striker disallowed a goal due to a push from Alexandra Ghiku, while at the other end, Gana did not score a single shot in the first period.
The Africans improved in the second period when Mohammed Kudus shot wide of the far post and got his bounty when André Ayew equalized from close range.
But Portugal responded with two goals in two minutes to seal the points, with Joao Felix converting a delightfully cut shot and substitute Rafael Leão scoring in cold blood just seconds into the pitch.
Osman Buhari headed in a late repechage for Ghana and the real drama could have unfolded in the ninth minute of stoppage time.
Goalkeeper Diogo Costa put the ball on the ground, seemingly unaware that Inaki Williams was behind him, but after he rushed to intercept the ball, the Ghana striker slipped at the crucial moment and the ball was kicked off the line.
The win means Portugal will top Group H after Uruguay and South Korea played out a goalless draw earlier on Thursday.
